Insider tip: It’s no coincidence that Formarinsee and the Rote Wand were named the most beautiful spot in Austria on the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) TV programme “9 Places – 9 Treasures” in 2015. The hiking bus runs three times a day to Formarinsee, allowing you to truly enjoy autumn whilst hiking in the Lechquellgebirge.
The water bubbles down the valley; nature is wonderfully peaceful; the only sound is your footsteps as you walk along the Lechweg at your own pace. You really ought to experience this!
From Lech to Füssen
Experience one of Europe’s last wild river landscapes. Over a distance of around 125 km, you’ll follow the River Lech from its source near Lake Formarin to the Lech Falls in Füssen in the Allgäu. Along the way, you’ll encounter one of Europe’s largest ibex colonies, cross Austria’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge and visit the Bavarian royal castles – a unique experience of nature.
The Lechweg is accessible in its entirety, weather permitting.
Hike: The Lechweg – from the source to the waterfall
Distance: 24 km
Elevation gain: 2000 m
Unlike many other Alpine trails, the Lechweg is relatively moderate in difficulty and can be managed even without prior Alpine hiking experience. Depending on how you plan your stages, you’ll cover a certain number of kilometres each day.

The Skyspace in Lech is a fascinating, walk-in artwork by the renowned US artist James Turrell, inviting you to experience the perception of space and light in a unique way. Through a special opening in the ceiling and sophisticated lighting installations, nature and architecture merge to create an unforgettable play of colours, particularly at sunrise or sunset, offering a fresh way to experience the Alpine landscape. If you would like to learn more about the philosophy and impact of this impressive artwork, you can take part in a public guided tour every Friday, which offers deeper insights into this unique installation.

The Gipslöcher are a true natural spectacle – they resemble the hollow half of an eggshell. It is a wonderful autumn hike – to the Gipslöcher via Oberlech and around the Karhorn to the Bodenalpe Bürstegg. Bürstegg was once the highest Walser settlement in Vorarlberg. It is a particularly rewarding hiking destination in Lech am Arlberg and easily accessible!
You can combine the hike with a visit to the Schottenhof and see the Highland cattle – the shaggy animals. These animals are very important for the high-alpine region, as they graze where farming machinery cannot reach and their weight compacts the ground, reducing the risk of avalanches in winter.
Tip: A visit to the Schottenhof is well worth it in both autumn and winter!
At 1,773 metres, you will find the European watershed. Between the Danube, the Black Sea, the Rhine and the North Sea. The Flexen Pass connects the upper Klostertal valley with the Lechtal valley – as the highest point
It is an awe-inspiring work of nature that reminds us that, in the end, everything is united and “one”, even if we see it as separate and, in any case, wish to name it as such. Visit the European watershed at the Flexen Pass.
Tip: A hike up to the Flexen Pass would also be well worth it during your winter holiday at the 4* Hotel Tannbergerhof!
